Fire alarm

Conventional or addressable? Choosing the right fire alarm system

The practical difference between the two, when each fits, and what to ask before you sign.

Last reviewed: · 4 min read

Every fire alarm system has a control panel, detectors, manual call points and notification devices. The key difference between the two types is how precisely they locate the alarm.

Conventional systems

Devices are grouped into zones; the panel shows which zone alarmed, not which device. It usually suits small sites with few zones and has a lower initial cost.

Addressable systems

Each device has its own address, so the panel shows exactly which device and where, and monitors each device's status and faults. It is preferred in larger or multi-storey buildings and makes maintenance easier.

Questions to ask before contracting

  • Which requirements apply to my activity and area?
  • How many zones or devices, and why?
  • Are spare parts available locally?
  • What do commissioning, testing and hand-over include?
